Ahmad Faraz (احمد فراز) was one of the most celebrated and widely read Urdu poets of the 20th century in Pakistan. His real name was Syed Ahmad Shah, and he used “Faraz” as his pen name (takhallus).
He rose to iconic status with his seductive romantic poetry as well as his bold voice against dictatorship and oppression. Many of his verses are still sung, recited in mushairas (poetry gatherings), and remain extremely popular today.
