Shariq Kaifi (born Syed Shariq Hussain on June 1, 1961, in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India) is a highly regarded contemporary Urdu poet. He is celebrated for his mastery in both ghazal and nazm, with poetry noted for its apparent simplicity that conceals deep observation, emotional depth, and artistic precision.
He comes from a literary family—his father was the renowned poet Kaifi Wijdani (Syed Rafaaqat Hussain). Shariq completed his B.Sc. and M.A. in Urdu in Bareilly. He is widely recognized as one of the leading Urdu poets in India today, frequently featured at major literary events like mushairas.
His work often explores themes of love, life’s ironies, pain, human relationships, and inner turmoil, delivered with subtle wit and profound insight.
